Kuala Lumpur, October 15, 2014- The International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) has organized a half-day thematic workshop titled, “Application of Tanazul (Waiver of Right) in Sukuk and Preference Shares: A Critical Analysis from the Shari’ah Perspective”. The workshop was held at the Multipurpose Hall, Lanai Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia, and attracted around 80 experts, comprising industry practitioners, academicians, Shari’ah scholars and regulators.

The workshop started with a du’a recitation by Dr Sa’id Adekunle Mikail, followed by welcoming remarks from Prof Dr Mohamad Akram Laldin, the Executive Director of ISRA. The discussion was initiated with a presentation by Br Mohd Bahroddin Badri, a researcher from the Islamic Banking Unit at ISRA. The workshop was moderated by Dr Mohamad Fairooz Abdul Khir.

 

After Br Mohd Bahroddin Badri’s presentation, three discussants, consisting of industry professionals and academicians, commented on the paper:

  • Professor Dr Engku Rabiah Adawiah binti Engku Ali (IIUM)
  • Associate Professor Dr Azman Mohd Noor (IIUM)
  • En. Abdul Ghani Endut (CIMB)

 

Much insightful feedback was received from discussants and participants. One of the many valuable areas of input touched upon in the discussion pertained to tanazul of voting rights by preference shareholders. At the end of the workshop, Dr Marjan Muhammad, Director of Research at ISRA, gave closing remarks and thanked all participants, presenters and committee members for making the event successful.
